Description
Bromeliad in flower. Epiphytic bromeliad (centre, family Bromeliaceae) growing on a tree in a tropical cloud forest. Bromeliads produce an inflorescence, or flower spike, only once, they then reproduce vegetatively by producing new plantlets called 'offsets' or 'pups'. Epiphytic bromeliads depend on the host tree for support, whilst water and nutrients are absorbed through the leaves. Photographed in Molinuco nature reserve, Ecuador.
